MILWAUKEE, Wis. (News Release) -- Homestanding and 19th-ranked Marquette used a pair of late second half goals to earn a 2-0 victory over the Louisville women’s soccer team on Friday night at Valley Fields.

With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 2-2-1 in BIG EAST Conference action and 7-3-1 overall, while the Golden Eagles improved to 4-0-0 in league games and 8-2-1 on the season.

“We fought hard for 90 minutes and unfortunately, on two set pieces, we had lapses that were the difference,” said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. “We had quality opportunities off of set pieces ourselves but couldn’t convert and I credit Marquette’s toughness in and around the box for that. It’s a game we will learn from and it will make us better.”

After the two teams played a scoreless first half and went more than 26 minutes of the second half without a goal, the Golden Eagles broke through for the game-winner in the 72nd minute when Mary Luba took a pass from Emily Jacobson and scored inside the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. The goal for Luba was her second of the season, while the assist was the fourth of the season for Jacobson.

Marquette added the final goal of the night less than 12 minutes later when Jacobson connected for an unassisted goal, her first goal of the season, in the 83rd minute of action. Overall, the Golden Eagles finished with a 25-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in shots on-goal. Marquette also had an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal, reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week Amanda Engel of the Golden Eagles finished with three saves to clinch her fourth straight shutout win. Senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) finished with a season-high eight saves in the loss for Louisville.

Up next, the Cardinals conclude their BIG EAST travel weekend in Tampa, Fla., against USF on Sunday at 1 p.m., ET.
