LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Louisville women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 1-0 win over Houston at the Carl Lewis Complex on Sunday afternoon. Louisville junior Casey Whitfield scored the game winner in the 71st minute to help the Cardinals improve to 8-3-1 on the year and 4-0-0 in league play. Houston falls to 1-6-3 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play.
Senior Charlyn Corral tested the Cougar’s defense early with a shot on goal in the fifth minute of play. In the 28th minute Christine Exeter had a shot on goal but Cami Koski made the save. One minute later Erin Yenney had another chance but couldn’t finish.
Devyn Ciotti had back-to-back chances in the 31st and the 35th minute but Koski was there to make the stops. Corral had another chance in the 44th minute but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Cardinal defense held Houston without a shot on goal in the first period.
Louisville’s best chance of the match came in the 53rd minute when Yenney hit the crossbar. The Cougar’s first shot on goal came in the 71st minute but Cardinal keeper Paige Brown made the save. Moments later Brown throws the ball to Yenney who passes it to Exeter. She slips the ball to a streaking Whitfield who finds the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Houston offense pressed forward trying to score the equalizer. Brown made saves in the 80th and the 81st minute to preserve the win. The Louisville defense did not allow another shot past the back line for the third shutout of the season.
Louisville finished the match with a 24-8 shot advantage and a 5-1 corner kick advantage. Koski finished with nine saves while Brown finished with three saves.
Louisville will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 11 as they host USF in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
