LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NEWS RELEASE) -- Six University of Louisville track and field student-athletes are set for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled to take place from Wednesday through Saturday, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, on the campus of Drake University.
The four-day event begins on June 6 at 1 p.m., with the start of the decathlon. Action continues on June 7 at 12:30 p.m., followed by 3 p.m. on June 8 and then 11 a.m. on June 9. Live results will be available through www.FlashResults.com. On Wednesday, live video can be seen on NCAA.com; each day following, streaming content can be accessed through ESPN3, with Trey Bender (play-by-play), Larry Rawson (analyst) and Jill Montgomery (reporter) calling the action.
Holly Knight, Louisville’s lone track athlete, leads the way by making her third outdoor nationals appearance. She has earned outdoor All-America honors twice previously and looks to earn her second distinction in the 10,000m after earning accolades in the event last year. At the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, she took seventh in the 10,000m race.
Headlining the field events are throwers Khadija Abdullah and Chinwe Okoro, with the duo is slated to take part in the shot put competition. Okoro broke the school record in the event earlier this year and currently holds the sixth-best mark nationally with a throw of 17.39m/57-0.75. Abdullah also holds a top-15 ranking, checking in at No. 13 with a throw of 16.85m/55-3.50. At the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, Abdullah and Okoro finished 1-2, respectively, in the event.
Qualifying for a pair of events at the NCAA Championships, Charachesicia Lockhart is set to compete in the long jump and triple jump. Upon breaking the school record in the long jump, the Dallas, Texas, native placed third in the competition at the preliminary rounds to advance.
Michelle Theophille and Maggie Gilbertson also are set to take part in the jumping events, competing on Friday in the women’s high jump. Heading into the competition, Theophille is tied for the fourth-best mark nationally after clearing 1.86m/6-1.25 en route to winning the conference title at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The mark tied a school best, set by Kelley Bowman at the national championships in 2006.
