University of Louisville women’s soccer head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes has announced the addition of talented newcomer Charlyn Corral to the Cardinals’ roster for 2012.

A native of Mexico City, Mexico, Corral is an athletic forward with extensive international experience playing for the Mexican National team. Most recently, she was a member of Mexican National team at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany seeing action in one match. Prior to that, she was a three-time member of Mexico’s U20 World Cup squad (2006, 2008, 2010) scoring four goals in 10 matches.

“Charlyn is obviously one of the most decorated players in Mexico and one of our most experienced recruits at the national team level,” said Ferguson-Dayes, the 2011 BIG EAST Coach of the Year. “She has played in numerous World Cups at both the youth and senior level, so we’re confident that she will be able to make an immediate impact at the college level. It’s an amazing time for Louisville women’s soccer and Charlyn adds an exciting element to our program.”

Along with her four World Cup appearances, Corral has been competing for Mexico’s national team since she was age 11. At age 14, she became the youngest player to ever score a goal in a World Cup match when she connected for two goals against Switzerland in the opening match of the 2006 U20 World Cup in Russia. She will have two years of remaining eligibility starting with the 2012 season after transferring from Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.

Corral and the Cardinals will begin preseason preparation when they report to campus later this month. Louisville, which won a school record 14 matches, won the BIG EAST National Division title and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship in 2011, will host a pair of exhibition matches on Aug. 10 (Ohio State, 6 p.m., ET) and Aug. 12 (Wright State, 1 p.m.) before opening the regular season on Aug. 17 at Butler.
