(NEWS RELEASE) -- The No. 24 Louisville(8-4-1, 4-1-0) men’s soccer team defeated No. 10 St. John’s (8-2-4, 2-2-1) 1-0 Saturday evening in Cardinal Park.  Will Vitalis scored his fourth goal of the season in the 17th minute to give Louisville its fourth BIG EAST victory.

The game started out pretty even with both teams taking over possession in the first few minutes.  The Cardinals were connecting well in the 17th minute, which paid off with a goal.  Buck Tufty took the ball just outside the penalty area and passed it to Marlon Hairston who found a streaking Vitalis, who then slipped the ball past the keeper for the goal.

Three minutes later St. John’s had an opportunity to score but Cardinal keeper Mike Mauro collected the ball for the save.  In the 30th minute Will Vitalis almost connected again but his shot went just wide of the goal.  In the 42nd minute St. John’s tried for the equalizer again but Mauro made the save.
Louisville finished the first period with a 5-3 shot advantage and a 2-0 corner kick advantage.  Mauro finished with two saves.

The Red Storm picked up the offensive tempo to start the second half, looking for the equalizer.  But it was Louisville’s Vitalis with the first shot on goal in the second half, but Diaz made the save by kicking the ball out of the goal mouth in the 51st minute.  Five minutes later St. John’s had another scoring opportunity by Mauro made the save once again.

In the 58th minute, Santiago Velez got ahead of the St. John’s defense and sent a shot that was saved by Diaz. In the 60th minute St. John’s sent a shot from outside the penalty box in but Mauro knocked the ball up and over the cross bar for the save. The Red Storm was not able to convert on the corner kick.

St. John’s last opportunity came in the 82nd minute but Mauro made the save to preserve the shutout.  The Cardinal defense held the Red Storm without a shot on goal in the final eight minutes for the win and three points in BIG EAST play.

St. John’s finished the game with a 10-9 shot advantage while the Cardinals held a 2-1 corner kick advantage.  Mauro finished the game with a career-high five saves while Diaz finished with two.

Louisville will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 17 as they travel to USF.  The game will be televised live on ESPNU at 7:00 p.m.
