LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field teams didn’t get the weather they hoped for in their first home outdoor meet, but the group compiled 29 top-five finishes on Saturday at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational at Cardinal Park.

Despite the windy and rainy conditions, the women’s team logged six victories.

In the field events, Hannah Cox won the long jump, Brittany Owens captured the triple jump, and Chanel Krause registered her first career outdoor win in the pole vault. Krause cleared the bar at 3.76m/12-4, a mark that teammate Chelsea Bingham cleared as well to earn runner-up.

Benadate Cheruiyot, Gwen Shaw, and Kelsey Cramsey highlighted the track performances. Cheruiyot raced to a win in the 3,000m steeplechase, setting the meet record with a time of 10:51.56. Gwen Shaw won the 100m hurdles, and Cramsey capped an impressive day that consisted of a runner-up finish in the 400m, a victory in the 800m, and leading the women’s 4x400m relay team to a third-place showing.

The men’s group was led by Tyler Byrne’s personal best in the 1,500m, which landed him a third-place showing. Teammates Edwin Kibichiy and Ernest Kibet finished in the top 10 as well in the race.

Jeron Brown and Nick Kennedy took second and third, respectively, in the long jump to highlight the men’s field events. Michael Thompson had a busy day, meanwhile, competing in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay events on the track in addition to taking part in the high jump, where he finished third.

In the final event of the day, Jenna Wargo made a triumphant return to place second in the women’s javelin after missing the entire 2012-13 season due to injury. The meet record holder in the event from 2012, she had a throw of 45.86m/150-5 in her first competition since May 2012. Katie Wimpari placed fourth in the event.

Louisville’s throws group took part in the hammer throw, shot put, and discus competitions on Friday.

Nils Westrich and Brad Vivace each registered personal bests to finish third and fourth, respectively, in the hammer throw. Westrich had a mark of 61.65m/202-3, while Vivace logged a throw of 60.85m/199-8. Freshman Codie Hamsley improved upon his already impressive season-opening mark in the discus, taking fourth with a toss of 54.05m/177-4 – a 14-foot improvement.

On the women’s side, Patrice Gates led a 1-2-3 finish in the women’s hammer throw. Rachel Serafin and Hannah Baker, who placed second and third, respectively, each notched personal bests. Dolly Nyemah finished inside the top five in the discus, with a solid throw of 47.26m/155-1.
