PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Providence 2-1 Saturday afternoon to clinch the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Championship.
 
The Cardinals (12-7, 3-3) will face the No. 2 seed, fourth-ranked Connecticut (16-2, 5-1) who fell 3-2 to third-ranked Syracuse in the regular season championship match on Saturday. Louisville and UConn will play in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Trager Stadium. Top-seeded Syracuse (15-1, 6-0) and the No. 4 seeded Providence (9-8, 3-3) will square off at 5 p.m. Friday.
 
Louisville and Providence played through 34 scoreless minutes in the first half before the Cards broke through on an unassisted goal by Alyssa Voelmle with 17 second left in the half. The sophomore’s eighth goal of the season gave Louisville a 1-0 lead entering the break. In the first half, the Friars held a 4-3 edge in shots while the penalty corners went 2-1 in Louisville’s favor.
 
The Friars used a penalty corner to pull even in the second half when Henni Tietze connected on assists by Kaleigh Fitzpatrick and Caitlin Malone to tie the game at 1-1 at the 42:11 mark
 
Seven minutes later, sophomore Becca Maddock dished a pass to junior Erin Schneidtmiller who knocked in the game-winner for her seventh goal of the season.
 
Cardinal goalkeeper senior Erin Conrad collected six saves in the win while Kathi Weidman had one stop for the Friars. Providence outshot Louisville 7-6 edge in the second half and 11-9 in the game while Louisville held a 3-2 advantage in corners in the second half and 5-3 in the game.
