The University of Louisville kicked off their “last chance” meets this weekend with the Alex Wilson Invitational held at Notre Dame’s Loftus Center.
The lone Cardinal competing on Friday night was junior distance runner Matt Bruce.
Bruce, the BIG EAST Champion in both the 3,000m and 5,000m, performed well against some of the nation’s top distance runners by finishing fifth in the 5,000m with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13:57.91.
This was a very successful race for Bruce because he improved on his previous NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:02.37, which he set with his BIG EAST Conference Championship in the 5,000m on Feb. 20, 2010 in New York City.
This is the last weekend of racing before the NCAA Indoor National Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., which will take place next weekend on March 12-13.
Bruce’s time of 13:57.91 is currently the 22nd best in the NCAA this season.
