BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- A person familiar with the decision says Western Kentucky coach David Elson has been fired but will finish out the season.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has not announced the decision. Athletic director Wood Selig and WKU president Gary Ransdell have scheduled a 1 p.m. CST press conference to discuss the future of the football program.

Elson is 39-41 in seven seasons with the Hilltoppers, who are in their first year as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Hilltoppers are 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the Sun Belt Conference. WKU has lost 17 straight games dating back to last season and dropped 22 consecutive games to FBS opponents.
