PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia has home-field advantage for its next three World Series outings against the Yankees, beginning tonight with Game 3. The two teams split the opening pair in New York. Andy Pettitte versus Cole Hamels is the pitching matchup.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A union deadline for a transit strike that could disrupt bus and subway services during the World Series games in Philadelphia has been moved to this evening, just hours before the start of Game 3. The union had threatened to go on strike at 12:01 this morning if talks with Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority did not reach some accord.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Top-ranked Florida puts a nation's-best 17-game winning streak on the line later this afternoon in Jacksonville. It's the Gators' annual meeting with the Georgia Bulldogs.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Earlier this week, captain Mary Joe Fernandez announced Serena Williams would play Fed Cup for the first time since 2007. Now, the U.S. Tennis Association says Williams has pulled out of the team that will face Italy in next weekend's final. Vania (vuh-NEE'-uh) King replaces Williams on the roster, joining surprise U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin (oo-DAN'), Liezel Huber (LEE'-zul HYOO'-bur) and Alexa Glatch.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Lewis Hamilton will be on the pole for tomorrow's Dubai Grand Prix thanks to a stunningly fast last lap in today's qualifying. The McLaren driver beat Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel by more than six-tenths of a second to claim his 17th Formula One pole.
