The BIG EAST Conference has announced the 24 teams that have been recognized with 2011-12 Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.

Twelve BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored as DePaul finished with a conference-best five teams recognized. Notre Dame and Villanova had three teams receive awards, while Georgetown, Providence, St. John’s and Seton Hall had two each. Cincinnati, Louisville, Marquette, Rutgers and West Virginia were represented by one team each.

The list of honored teams includes Louisville’s men’s basketball team, which captured the 2012 BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the NCAA Final Four, and the St. John’s baseball team, which tied for the BIG EAST regular-season title, won the conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Championship Super Regionals. Villanova’s men’s cross country team and Notre Dame’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams won the 2011 BIG EAST title, while Marquette’s women’s soccer team captured the conference’s American Division regular-season crown.

The winners were chosen based on the 2011-12 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution’s roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
