LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- There might not be a scarier sight in college basketball than seeing the Kentucky basketball team as your opponent. The team is all enormous, all wildly talented and now deemed the top team in the country.

For the first time since the ‘96 season Kentucky enters the year as the top ranked team.  They won the championship in ‘96.  The Cats received 27 first place votes.

Coming in at number three is the defending champion Louisville Cardinals. The cards received 14 first place votes. The cards take on Pikeville next Wednesday.

Michigan State came in at number two. Don’t forget, Kentucky and Michigan State face off on Nov. 12 in Chicago.

Indiana was not ranked in the top 25 but they did receive enough votes to be considered 28 in the country.  Kentucky takes on Transylvania Friday, Nov. 1.
