Junior right-hander Justin Amlung was named BIG EAST Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season on Monday following his dominant performance in the Louisville baseball team’s series-opening win over St. John’s last weekend.
Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS) pitched 7.0 shutout innings allowing only three hits with six strikeouts to earn his eighth win of the season in Louisville’s 5-0 victory against the Red Storm on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium. The preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year was also selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week on April 30 for his shutout performance against UConn.
Overall, he is 8-3 with a 1.99 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 90.1 innings. With his 23rd career win, Amlung gained sole possession of second on Louisville’s career win list with Brian Bentley (1997-2000).
With Amlung’s two weekly awards, the Cardinals have won five BIG EAST Player/Pitcher of the Week honors overall this season, including freshman pitcher Jared Ruxer (April 16), sophomore infielder Ty Young (March 19) and senior outfielder/first baseman Stewart Ijames (Feb. 27).
The 22nd-ranked Louisville baseball team opens the final week of the regular season with the home finale at Jim Patterson Stadium on Tuesday at 6 p.m., ET against Morehead State. That will be followed by a three-game series at Pittsburgh to complete the 2012 BIG EAST regular season race.
