When the University of Louisville tied for the BIG EAST Conference regular season baseball championship on May 19, it marked the tenth league title the Cardinals won during the 2011-12 season.
UofL’s 10 league titles is a school record, surpassing the nine championships won by the Cardinals during the 2008-09 season.
UofL claimed five regular season BIG EAST championships: baseball (co-champions), football (co-champs), women’s soccer (north division), softball and volleyball. The Cardinals won five tournament or post-season titles: men’s basketball, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, and women’s track and field.
In the Cardinals’ seven seasons in the BIG EAST Conference, UofL has won 50 league titles. That figure is second to Notre Dame’s 64 championships and 14 more than Connecticut’s third-place total of 36 during the seven-year period. Seven of the league’s 16 schools have achieved double-digit championships in that time.
Louisville’s overall athletics success ranks among the nation’s elite as well. The Cardinals are currently tied for 10th in the Capital One Cup men’s standings and finished 19th in the final winter Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings.
