(WHAS11)  Saturday, April 30, 2011, Sports with Matt Hobbs:

Next week at this time we’ll already know who the big winner of the 137th Kentucky Derby is. Saturday afternoon the horse that many think will be the one we’re all talking about arrived at Churchill Downs.

Also, it was an exceptionally busy morning at the track as several Oaks and Derby contenders got in their final work session before the big races next week.  Shackleford turned heads by turning a five furlong time of 58 seconds in his morning workout.  Calvin Borel’s mount Twice the Appeal went out in the early session and turned a six furlong time of 1:15.

And Saturday was day was day three of the NFL draft, and for those on the bubble of getting picked, today’s late rounds held more drama than ever before.  With the lockout back on, anyone who isn’t picked by the end of today can’t sign as a free agent until the league is back in business and that could be a little bit.  A few guys who do not have that concern anymore include Louisville’s Bilal Powell, who was picked in the fourth round today by the New York Jets.  Louisville is also sending tackle Byron Stingley to the show; he was picked up today by the Tennesee Titans in the 6th round.

Finally, New England Patriot and former Louisville standout Deion Branch held his second annual football camp this afternoon at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.  Much of the proceeds from the camp go directly to the Deion Branch Foundation which helps people fund their treatment process with meningitis.  Branch, to his credit, doesn’t want praise just help with a cause that’s close to his heart.
