LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Seventeen-year-old Sharieff Rhaheed-Muhammad was arrested earlier in February and faces sex charges after Fort Pierce Florida officials determined it's almost 100 percent certain he impregnated his 14-year-old cousin.
“This is a major issue for both of these young people. A life has been lost; a family needs to be repaired. This is much more serious than anything that has to do with sports,” CardinalSports.com’s Howie Lindsey said.
The police report states the 14-year-old had an abortion when she was approximately five months pregnant. Her statement also claims Rhaheed- Muhammad began inappropriately touching her when she was just 10 or 11-years-old. Tuesday night, Feb. 25, when the news broke, the university said Louisville coach Bobby Petrino was aware of the arrest but had no further comment at the time.
“Louisville is well within its right to say ‘this just isn't going to work out for us,’” Lindsey said.
But the fans do have some comments regarding the arrest.
“I think that people who are looked to as important people should have a high moral character. They should be able to be looked up to and not down at,” UofL fan Brandon Schroeder said.
“I don't think that we should pass judgment on anyone until it's been decided in court,” fan Matthew Smith said.
“I can certainly understand fans who say ‘cut it now’, we don’t want any of this tied to Louisville,” Lindsey said.
Calls to the Fort Pierce Police Department were not returned. If convicted, Rhaheed-Muhammad could face up to 15 years in prison.
