(WHAS11) -- A Tennessee high school's talented basketball team is out of the running for the state championship because an adult was posing as a student and playing on the team.
It turns out a 22-year-old married man falsified documents so he could go back to high school and play for a highly ranked basketball team in Memphis, Tenn.
Apparently, the man's wife signed papers stating she was his guardian. No one ever checked the wife’s claim and the scandal has now come to light.
Since the story broke, the team has been disqualified from the state championship.
“It's absurd. The admin has failed. They're not keeping the kids safe. They're not doing checks and balances,” James Muhammad, parent of a player, said.
This isn't the first bit of controversy for this basketball team. Two weeks ago several of their players were disqualified after a fight. Then last week, tragedy for the team when their coach was found dead in his home.
