LEXINGTON, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Joker Phillips stood in the middle of the field at Commonwealth Stadium where he was mobbed by former players and staff members at Kentucky. Everyone one of them congratulating their former head coach on a 24-7 victory. It was the 27th straight win for Florida and the first time Phillips was on the winning side.
I talked with Joker’s brother on the field after the game who told me, “It was bittersweet.” Joker still loves Kentucky. He’s just at Florida right now and has a job to do for the Gators.
People only remember the fact Joker didn’t get the job done as a head coach at his alma mater. However, it’s tough for some to admit he was a very good offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Kentucky has their new head coach in Mark Stoops who’s quickly finding out winning at UK isn’t easy. Stoops has made up a bunch of ground on the recruiting trail, and the team is getting better each week. It’ll just take time to see if their progress translates in victory on the field.
Also greeting Phillips at midfield was his former boss, Mitch Barnhart. The two shared a hug for what seemed like a few minutes. Saturday night in Commonwealth Stadium was proof that change was good for both sides. Everybody won.
