JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Whitney Arion was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Caralisa Connell tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the No. 16/17 University of Louisville softball team to a 9-0 win over host Jacksonville Saturday night.

After being shut out for the first time this season in an eight-inning 1-0 loss to Ohio State, the Cards found their offense with 11 hits including two doubles and a home run in Saturday’s final game.

The Cards jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Alicja Wolny delivered a two-out single and Taner Fowler followed with a double to place runners at second and third. An error allowed Jordan Trimble to reach and scored both runners.

Jacksonville (6-3) threatened in the home half of the inning when a walk and a single placed runners at second and third with no outs. Louisville starting pitcher Caralisa Connell and the Cardinal defense retired the next three batters to end the inning.

In the third, Brown led off with a single and was safe on a close play at third when Emily Sanchez reached on a fielder’s choice. With runners on the corners and one out, Connell got Ashley Simon to ground out to second baseman Katie Keller who tagged Sanchez and threw to first baseman Wolny to end the inning.

The Cards increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Wolny sent a two-out shot over the fence in left center field for her second home run of the season.

Louisville used four hits and an error to tally three more runs in the sixth. Trimble led off the frame with a base hit, took second on Maggie Ruckenbrod’s sacrifice bunt and stole third to set up Hannah Kiyohara’s RBI single. Pinch-runner Chrisanna Roberts came around to score on Arion’s single. An error allowed Kayla Soles to reach and sent Arion home to increase the lead to 6-0.

Arion’s three-run double in the seventh added to the lead. Trimble drew a one-out walk, Ruckenbrod singled and Kiyohara walked to load the bases for Arion whose double made the score 9-0.

Connell (3-1) got the complete game shutout win with six strikeouts. Wolny was 2 for 4 with two runs.

Dale Tillman (1-1) took the loss allowing six runs, four earned on eight hits and striking out two.
