LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No.11 University of Louisville softball team fell 6-2 to Iowa Monday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The loss snapped the Cards 11-game winning streak.
“I thought every part of our game was lacking - pitching, defense and offense,” said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. “All credit goes to Iowa for coming out ready to play.”
The Hawkeyes (18-7) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Bradi Wall reached on a fielder’s choice and took second on Megan Blank’s walk. Holly Hoffman’s infield single loaded the bases. RBI singles from Kayla Massey, Michelle Zoeller and Brianna Luna gave Iowa a 3-0 lead. Junior Caralisa Connell came in and struck out Sammi Gyerman and catcher Maggie Ruckenbrod picked off Kayla Massey at second base to end the inning.
The Cards answered in the bottom of the first when Katie Keller walked to lead off the inning, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Trimble and then scored on a Ruckenbrod single. With two outs, Kiyohara ripped a single to right to plate Alicja Wolny, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. A ground out ended the inning and stranded two runners .
Things settled down until the sixth when Iowa’s Brianna Luna doubled to lead off. Connell struck out Gyerman and Ashley Akers advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt before Johnnie Dowling ripped an RBI hit to plate Luna. Bradi Wall singled to left, pushing Dowling to second before Megan Blank hit a two-run double.
U of L bats were quiet with the Cardinals getting just one baserunner after the Hawkeye three-spot when Katie Keller walked in the top of the seventh.
Iowa starter Kayla Massey held the Cards to four hits and two unearned runs to notch the win and move her record to 8-4. Luna led the Hawkeyes offensively, going 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Louisville starter Rachel Le Coq (9-2)took the loss, giving up three runs in one-third inning of work. Connell came out of the bullpen to throw six and two-thirds innings, striking out nine, and giving up six hits and three runs.
