LOUISVILLE, Ky. (News Release) -- Gwen Rucker and Lola Arslanbekova led the University of Louisville volleyball team with seven kills apiece to lead the Cards to a 3-0 sweep over Marshall in the Cardinal Classic Saturday morning at the KFC Yum! Center.
U of L improved to 5-1 on the season by hitting .389 in the 25-9, 25-15, 25-12 win. Katie George and Hannah Kvitle contributed 15 assists each to the Cardinal effort. Marshall was led by local product Laura Der who had nine kills and five digs.
“It was a great win over a strong C-USA school,” said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. “I also like bringing teams in with locals kids like Marshall’s Katy Schad, Sammie Bane, and Laure Der so they can play back in their home turf. Everyone did a great job for us today. I saw a lot of good things out there.”
Louisville took the first set against Marshall 25-9. The Cardinals opened the set early with a 7-0 run that Marshall could not bounce back from. Midway through the first set the Cardinals boasted a hitting percentage of .800, while the Thundering Herd were hitting -.190. Gwen Rucker had a strong stretch for Louisville with four straight service aces. Louisville ended the set hitting .529 and Marshall -.111. Gwen Rucker finished the set with five service aces. The Cards also protected the net well with three blocks and the Thundering Herd struggled with zero.
The Cardinals entered the second set continuing the momentum they gained from the first. After opening the set with close back and forth play, the Cards turned their lead from 6-5 to 14-5 in the midst of an 8-0 run. The Cardinals eventually took the set 25-15. Carly Sahagian lead Louisville with four kills in the set. Accompanying her efforts were Brooke Mattingly and Lola Arslanbekova with three kills each. Hannah Kvitle added 10 assists for the Cards in the set. The Cardinal defense held the Thundering Herd to a -.016 hitting percentage through two sets.
Katie George opened the third set with a service ace and the Cardinals took an early 5-0 lead. U of L continued to maintain their lead with runs throughout the set and won 25-12. Louisville ended the third set with a hitting percentage in the match of .389 compared to -.058 from Marshall.
The Cards will play Samford Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center in their final appearance in the Cardinal Classic.
