Ironman competition putting last minute touches in place before race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The final touches are being put on one of the toughest, most grueling Triathlons in the world.

Ironman 2013 features a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike race and a 26.2 mile marathon.

Thousands from across America and the world compete in Ironman competitions each year.

WHAS11’s Brittany Gonzalez talked to participants a day before the race to see how they’re handling preparations and what security is being put in place during the event. Click the video player for more.

Check below the street and road closures when Ironman begins Sunday morning.

5 am - 6:30 pm
•    Witherspoon Street from Preston Street to Bingham Way
•    River Road from Third Street I-64 West ramp to Bingham Way (local access only - Joe's Crab Shack)
7:30 am - 6:30 pm
•    River Road from Preston Street to Witherspoon Street
•    River Road from Preston Street to U.S. 42

Morning traffic will be allowed west on River Road after the bicycle safety tail car.
Afternoon traffic (approximately 1 pm) will be allowed east on River Road after the safety tail car.

11:30 am - 7 pm
•    Brook Street from Witherspoon Street to Main Street
•    Main Street from Brook Street to Third Street
•    Second Street (under Second Street Bridge) from Witherspoon Street to River Road
•    Third Street from Main Street to Liberty Street

11:30 am - 1:30 am
•    Third Street from Liberty Street to Winkler Avenue
•    Fourth Street from Liberty Street to Chestnut Street
•    Muhammad Ali Boulevard from Second Street to Fourth Street
•    Chestnut Street from Third Street to Fifth Street

Noon to 1 am
•    Winkler Avenue from Third Street to Fourth Street
•    Fourth Street from Winkler Avenue to Oakdale Avenue
•    Oakdale Avenue from Fourth Street to Southern Parkway
•    Central Avenue from Fourth Street to Sixth Street

12:30 pm - 1 am
•    Southern Parkway from Third Street to New Cut Road
•    Southern Parkway ramp from Interstate 64 (Watterson Expressway) eastbound

3 pm - 1 am
•    Liberty Street from Second Street to Fifth Street
Traffic will only be allowed to cross the route on the following roadways when the area is clear of runners during the following times:
Jefferson Street    Entire Event
Liberty Street    7 am - 3 pm
Breckinridge Street               11:30 am - 2 pm
Kentucky Street    11:30 am - 2 pm
Hill Street    11:30 am - 2 pm
Cardinal Boulevard    11:30 am - 2 pm
Central Avenue    Noon - 2 pm
Woodlawn Avenue    12:30 pm - 2 pm

The Watterson Expressway can also be used to cross the route during the entire event.
