LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NEWS RELEASE) -- For the 19th consecutive year, the Kroger Company will celebrate the football rivalry between the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky by sponsoring a Governor’s Cup week.

The events begin with the reception and auction on Wednesday July 25 at the Muhammad Ali Center, View Point Room. Complimentary tours of the Ali Center will begin at 5 p.m. and Hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and an auction will follow at 6.

The Governor’s Cup Classic golf tournament will be held Thursday July 26 at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. Louisville Coach Charlie Strong and Kentucky Coach Joker Phillips will make opening comments and answer questions at the Cardinal Club beginning at 12:45 p.m.

Some of the greatest players and coaches from both schools attend this event each year to share stories and pay tribute to the honorees. The 2012 event will honor Sonny Collins and Harry Jones from Kentucky and Dwayne Woodruff and Browning Nagle from Louisville.

As the sponsor of the Governor’s Cup, The Kroger Company also supports the academic pursuits of both schools. Kroger President John Hackett will donate $10,000 to the general scholarship fund of each school. Kroger's donations as a 19-year sponsor now total $380,000, $190,000 to each school.

This year’s Governor’s Cup benefits Dare to Care Food Bank.  As Kentuckiana families continue to need food assistance in record numbers, net proceeds from this event will support Dare to Care’s mission to feed the hungry.
