LOUISVILLE, Ky. (News Release) -- Louisville’s Charlyn Corral leads Mexico with five goals in three matches at the 2013 World University Games. Mexico advanced to the quarterfinals after recording a 3-0 record in Group B play.
Mexico opened up play with a 3-2 win over Canada on Friday. Mexico lead 2-0 before the Canadians fought back to tie the game in the 67th minute. Corral scored the game winner in the 83rd minute. Corral also scored in the 46th minute.
On Sunday Mexico defeated China 6-2 in group play. Corral started the scoring with a goal in the 11th minute. She scored again in the 73rd minute to give Mexico a 4-1 lead. China scored on a penalty in the 92nd minute but it was not enough to overcome the four goal deficit.
Mexico defeated Ireland 4-2 on Tuesday in the final Group B match. Ireland got on the board first scoring in the 16th minute of play. Then Mexico scored four straight goals to put the match out of reach. Corral scored the team’s second goal of the match in the 37th minute.
Mexico advanced to the quarterfinals to play Korea on Thursday, July 11.
