(NEWS RELEASE) -- Lola Arslanbekova had 21 kills and 11 digs to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over the University of Connecticut in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Storrs.
“It was a great job by Emily Juhl, Gwen Rucker and Lola Arslanbekova – a true team effort,” said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. “UConn did a great job and I know why they are playing so tough in the league. They played hard and it was just a great effort by them.”
U of L improved to 18-3 overall and 7-1 in the league with the 21-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 win. Emily Juhl had 11 kills and four blocks. Gwen Rucker had 11 kills, three aces and seven blocks. UConn drops to 12-10 and 3-4 in the BIG EAST.
In the first set, U of L went out to a 5-1 lead but the Huskies tied at 12. U of L seemed to have things under control with a 17-12 lead when UConn called timeout. The Huskies regrouped and ran off six straight and force a Cardinal timeout. After tying at 19, the Cards let the Huskies off the chain for a 6-2 run. U of L hit a chilly .125 and were led by Juhl’s four kills.
In the second set, U of L was up 13-8 but UConn narrowed the margin to one at 17-16 and forced a Cardinal timeout. This time the Cards didn’t waver, going on an 8-1 run for the 25-18 win. The Cards hit .278 in the set and Arslanbekova had four kills and Rucker had four kills and four blocks to pace U of L.
In the third set, the teams traded points until UConn made the first move after tying at 17 to go up 21-18. Three straight Cardinal errors gave the Huskies set point. U of L scored five straight to steal the set 26-25. U of L outhit UConn .250-.182 and had five blocks. Arslanbekova and Rucker each had four kills apiece.
U of L had a 10-7 lead in the fourth set and widened the lead to six at 18-12 before the Huskies managed to tie at 19 and force a Cardinal timeout. Coming out of the huddle, the Cards scored six of the last eight points for the 25-22 win.
U of L stays on the road as they travel to Syracuse and Marquette next weekend
