(WHAS11) - A Bullitt East High School football player is in critical condition right now after playing in a JV football game.
He has a brain injury but exactly how he was hurt still remains a mystery.
At Bullitt East High School the football team took to the field without one of their players Tuesday.
Absent from practice is 17-year-old Jesse Bratcher.
The high school junior is at University Hospital and his future is uncertain.
On Monday night, Bratcher was playing in a Junior Varsity football game at Bullitt East.
The team took on Holy Cross and after a play the linebacker walked to the sidelines.
And that's when coaches noticed something was wrong.
According to the coaches, there wasn't anything about the specific play that caught anyone's attention.? It wasn't until he came off the field that he exhibited symptoms of being dazed and confused.
After that he was rushed to University Hospital.
It was determined the Bullitt East student had a brain injury and had brain surgery.
Right now the district is trying to pinpoint how the player was injured.
Bratcher played both Varsity and JV football.
His fellow football players are now rallying around their team mate as he faces his toughest battle.
Neither school recorded the JV football game.
