(WHAS11) - When you're about saddle a record 43rd Kentucky Derby starter like trainer D. Wayne Lukas is, there's no need to be anxious about the first Saturday in May.

"I don't get butterflies that day as much as I have a great respect for it. It's a humbling race in a lot of ways. It'll take you to your knees yet it'll take you to the top of the mountain in a hurry too. I get comfortable with the situation," says Lukas. He has celebrated four Derby wins.

That's tied for second most all time.

After missing out on the last three Derbys, he's back in the run for the roses this year with Flying Private.

"I just feel like I've been blessed so much in this race. In this particular week with Oaks and Derby horses. It'd be a lot less if I said 'damn I don't have one this year'. The fact we have one is great. If we don't have one we'll wait til next year and keep trying," says Lukas.

While Lukas admits he doesn't get butterflies anymore the Kentucky Derby still holds a place in his heart.

"It's still special. That fever runs hot and deep. If you've ever been in there or even been in it. It'll grab a hold of you. I put it in perspective. You got to be a little of a realist when you've been in 30 of them," says Lukas.

Flying Private is ridden by jockey Robby Albarado and he says any horse that D. Wayne Lukas trains has a shot at winning.
