CINCINNATI (AP) — Dan Driessen was an overlooked member of the Cincinnati Reds' Big Red Machine, a backup first baseman with a quiet personality. Now, he's right up there with them.
Driessen was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame on Saturday, along with first baseman Sean Casey and 19th Century player John Reilly. Driessen and Casey were honored on the field before a game against the Minnesota Twins.
Driessen said he was "stunned" when he found out he was joining his more famous teammates in the Hall of Fame. Shy by nature, he was content to let them get the attention. He said that going into the Hall with them was like coming in from the cold.
The outgoing Casey was one of the Reds' most popular players, nicknamed "The Mayor."
