The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied a request by Gov. Ernie Fletcher for assistance in the aftermath of severe storms and tornadoes that struck western Kentucky earlier this month.
Fletcher said Friday he would appeal FEMA's decision for financial assistance for the hardest hit residents.
A line of strong storms and three tornadoes hit western Kentucky on April 2. The damage was widespread. Hardest hit areas included Christian County where 70 homes were destroyed and 233 were damaged.
"FEMA is going to have to go back to the drawing board on this one," Fletcher said in a statement. "The severity and magnitude of the destruction in Christian County is real, and it deserves a real response. I am not happy with this decision."
