LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- For the first time are hearing from Congressman John Yarmuth and his 85-year-old (now 86) mother after an accident last May left her trapped in her car in a flooded creek.

Edna Yarmuth, who had been hit from behind, hit the gas and veered off the road to avoid the car in front of her off Brownsboro Road. She says she could not control the car, hit trees and went into the creek. Click here to see photos from the accident.

The windshield broke out and water was pouring in. Edna says she then moved to a safer seat. She was just about ready to try and get out of a back window when she heard a voice, a man saying "stay in the car lady."

Rescue workers made their way over the fast moving water with a ladder, broke out the back window to reach and rescued her.  Edna Yarmuth says he put his hand on her and said "hold on."

Congressman Yarmuth heard what happened and met her at the hospital. She had a lump on her forehead, two black eyes and the most serious injury would be a fractured vertebrae. Congressman Yarmuth says he asked her how she was doing and like always she said – just fine.

His now 86-year old mother says shes having four kids in six and a half years prepares you for anything.

Edna lost her husband when he was just 50 and she was the sole parent guiding their four children and now grandchildren in the family.

The Yarmuth’s called her escape nothing short of miracle.

Edna Yarmuth has a new car in the garage waiting for her when her vertebrae finally heals. She is convinced that she will drive again.

Another smaller miracle following the accident?

After nearly 50 years she is no longer smoking. Her subsequent hospital stay kept her from lighting up.

One horrible day ---one lucky--and now smoke-free lady!
