CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A woman is dead and the suspect is in custody after an overnight shooting in Clarksville.

The shooting happened around 5 a.m. Monday in the 600 block of W. Kenwood Avenue near Loomis Avenue. Police said the suspect began banging on the door at a home in the 600 block of Kenwood Avenue, looking for the victim, Lisa McQuirt. When McQuirt came out of the house, police said Ronald Shewmaker shot her in the chest.

A witness at the scene told WHAS11's Johnny Archer she was out walking her dog when she saw a man come from the front of the home and slash tires of a car parked in front of the house. Afraid the man may come after her, the witness said she went back in to her home and that's when she heard three gun shots.

McQuirt was transported to University of Louisville Hospital where she later died. Police did confirm the car belongs to the victim.

Police said the McQuirt and Shewmaker knew each other. A search was initiated for Shewmaker and he was taken into custody just before 8 a.m.

Shewmaker is being held at the Clark County jail and police said he is not cooperating.
