SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Firefighters worked in downtown Scottsburg for hours after a building exploded overnight and caused a blaze. They called in the city's structural engineer to make sure there was no collapse.

Flames went through the roof of a two story building in historic downtown Scottsburg.

"That's where we have all our family gatherings and we planned on having our Christmas on Saturday night," Sandee Owens, the owner said.

Nobody was hurt. The overnight fire started with an explosion at a dental office on the first floor. A chain of events sparked flames that spread to the One Main Financial store next door.

"By the signs it does look like some type of explosion. It could be a numerous amount of things depending on what the dentist office did have inside," Chief James Richey with Scottsburg Fire said. "Something as simple as natural gas."

The top floors of both buildings are a total loss with heavy fire, smoke and water damage all throughout, including Owens' renovated two bedroom apartment.

Everything can be replaced, but Owens can only hope her family's sentimental items can be salvaged.

"If I had my mother and grandmother's rockers out of there I'm ok," Owens said.

Owens said they will have to rebuild with insurance money. Investigators are working with the Fire Marshall to uncover the cause.
