LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – In wake the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings, New Albany police are hosting their first gun buyback program.

The program was in the works through the Mayor’s office, but the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy put a rush on Friday’s event.

Various prices will be offered for guns including $200 for handguns, rifles, or shotguns and $300 for semi-automatic firearms.

“I don’t know what the response will be. This is kind of a chaotic time in our country right now,” Precision Gunsmith owner Kenny Allen said.

Allen said in the last two weeks only a couple of people have sold them their guns. Usually, he buys nearly a dozen every week.

New Albany Police says if they can take a few guns out of the wrong hands by putting cash into the resident’s hands, the program will be a success.

“No record will be kept with the individual’s name, address or anything,” New Albany Police Major Keith Whitlow said.

The gun buyback program will be held at the Ekin Avenue Recreation Center in New Albany from noon to 8 P.M.
