CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Forty-nine-year-old Richard Hooten is facing numerous charges in Clark County including rape and murder. The victim, Tara Willenborg, was laid to rest on Wednesday.

Court documents state Hooten told police graphic details about the night the incident happened at the Cambridge Square apartments in Clarksville. Hooten was staying there and he told police he asked Willenborg if he could come to “chill” in her apartment on Friday night.

Police said Hooten told them he forced himself on her minutes later, then raped and choked her. When he realized she wasn’t breathing, he said he tried to perform CPR but it was too late. Hooten said he wrapped an apron around her neck to make it look like suicide.

Since the crime, officials with LMPD’s Sex Crimes Unit confirm they’re investigating Hooten for an incident with an adult woman from earlier this year. Police also said Hooten told them about other crimes. Officers took him from jail to investigate his claims, but WHAS11 is told they have been unsubstantiated so far.

Hooten has least six prior felony convictions. A judge ordered he be held without bond.

“I guess it's appropriate that while family and friends are making funeral arrangements and grieving for her that we take the next legal step here and be sure that he doesn't again see the light of day,” prosecutor Steve Stewart said.
