The University of Louisville field hockey team will open BIG EAST Conference play against Georgetown Friday at Trager Stadium at 6 p.m. Following Friday’s game, the Cards will travel to Kent, Ohio to face Kent State on Sunday at noon.

 

The Cardinals enter their BIG EAST opener with a 5-3 record and are led offensively by sophomore Becca Maddock’s 12 points (5G, 2A). Junior Erin Schneidtmiller follows with eight points (4G). Senior Erin Conrad carries a 1.67 goals-against average with one shutout on the season.

 

Last time out

Last weekend, Louisville went 1-1 in the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational. The Cardinals outlasted Central Michigan 3-2 in double overtime to advance to the championship game where they fell 2-1 in overtime to host No. 19 Michigan State.

Georgetown, Friday, Sept. 21, 6 p.m. – Trager Stadium

Series Record: Louisville leads 6-0

Last Meeting: Sept. 17, 2011: Hayley Turner scored a pair of goals and added an assist while Erin Schneitmiller, Becca Maddock and Elizabeth Vance added to the score as the Cards defeated the Hoyas 5-0 at Georgetown.

Scouting the Hoyas: Georgetown enters the weekend with a 2-6 overall record. The Hoyas are on a two-game losing streak after opening last weekend with a 5-2 loss to BIG EAST Conference opponent Providence and falling 3-2 to Lehigh. Annie Wilson leads the team with seven points (1G, 5A) Catherine Shugrue and Kimberly Keating have three goals apiece.

 

Card Against the Field

Kent State, Sunday, Sept. 23, 12 p.m. – Kent, Ohio

Series Record: Kent State lead 23-8

Last Meeting: Nov. 6, 2004 – UL defeated Kent State 4-2 to capture its second straight Mid-American Conference title in their last season in the league. Louisville overcame a 2-0 deficit with goals by Kimberly Hughes, Jen Kastelic,(twice) and Janelle Avila. 

Scouting the Golden Flashes: Kent State enters the weekend with a 4-6 overall record. The Golden Flashes are coming off of an 8-2 loss at Ohio State and a 7-1 setback at the hands of second-ranked Syracuse. Julia Hofmann leads the team with 15 points (7G, 1A) while Rebecca Lee follows with 12 points (5G, 2A). Jahna Jordan (4-6) carries a 4.19 goals against average with one shutout on the year.

 

Voelmle Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll

Sophomore Alyssa Voelmle was selected to the BIG EAST Conference honor roll on Sept. 17. Voelmle scored a pair of goals including the game-winner in the double overtime win over Central Michigan and tied the game to send it into overtime in the 2-1 loss at No. 19 Michigan State. Voelmle is now third on the team with three goals and seven points on the season.  

 

Working Overtime

Three of the Cards’ last four games have ended in overtime. Louisville fell 3-2 in OT at Indiana, won 3-2 in double OT against Central Michigan and lost 2-1 to No. 19 Michigan State. 

 

Up Next

Following this weekend the Cardinals will take on a pair of ranked opponents when they travel to Syracuse for a BIG EAST matchup with the second ranked Orange on Sept. 29. They will face No. 21 Albany on Sunday, Sept. 30.
