LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Changes are coming to a portion of Dixie Highway in South Louisville after a Valley High school student was seriously injured when she was hit by a car on her way to school.

On Thursday afternoon new school zone speed limit signs were installed near the intersection with Valley Station, reminding drivers to slow down to 25 miles per hour.

The effort was spearheaded by Tim Childers, a resident touched by the story of Gretchen Rennirt, the 17-year-old student who was in a coma after being hit by a car in August.

He contacted law makers and pushed for the new signage. While the signs may slow down drivers, student behavior is also a concern.

Students frequently ignore the cross walk signals or jaywalk in the middle of the block. Principal Gary Hurt feels the addition of a crossing guard is the next piece in improving traffic safety on campus.
