LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – As Louisville begins to move along with construction of a new downtown bridge, a new hotel hopes to add more flavor in the thriving Fourth Street district.

A groundbreaking was held Thursday morning for the brand new Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Louisville which will be located at Fourth and Chestnut Streets.

The hotel will have 8 stories and more than 160 rooms. It’s located in the Clay Commons District which has been developed around a series of buildings including the historic Henry Clay building.

Mayor Greg Fischer says the popularity of the Bourbon Trail and internationally known restaurants mean there’s a higher demand for distinctive places to stay downtown.

“This new hotel will be a welcome addition to the overall hotel accommodations we offer downtown visitors and specifically a great complement to the growing arts and entertainment scene in that mid-section area of South Fourth,” Fischer said.

The new hotel addition is part of a plan to continue the extension of Fourth Street dubbed “SoFo” due to the recent openings of homegrown businesses along the corridor.

The hotel is expected to open in fall 2014.
