LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Zachariah “Zax” Jones, 12, is in critical condition at Kosair Children’s Hospital. Police say he was shot inside his Fairdale home in the 400 block of Mount Holly Road.

The boy is being watched closely by doctors after his surgery. There are still many questions about the shooting.

"You hear about all these shootings in the city but not around here," said Mike Talley, a neighbor.

Detectives were called to the scene of the shooting around10:00 Tuesday night. Louisville Metro Police say the boy did not shoot himself. They are still investigating if it was an accident.

"There were several people inside at the time when the shooting occurred. We're still trying to determine who was where," Alicia Smiley with Louisville Metro Police said.

"They brought someone out on a stretcher and that was pretty much about it," Talley said.
"I hope the young man can pull through and put all this behind him."

Police cruisers escorted the ambulance and blocked off streets while rushing Jones to Kosair Children's Hospital for surgery.

Nobody was home when WHAS11 News approached the house on Wednesday.

WHAS11 News spoke to Jones’ family briefly over the phone and asked how the boy was doing and if the shooting was accidental. They said they were too emotional to make comment.
