Jamie Martin

Meteorologist

"Good Morning Kentuckiana." I use that phrase a lot. I'm your GMK meteorologist Jamie Martin. Thank you for giving me the chance to tell you more about myself.

I caught the "weather bug" growing up in Clearwater, Florida.

We had it all there. Well, everything but snow. Tornadoes, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, hail, and flooding all in one place.

Some people might consider that bad luck, but for me it was the beginning of a lifelong love.

Imagine standing on your Grandparents' front porch and watching waterspouts develop over the Gulf, or sitting in your mom's station wagon for half an hour because the hail wouldn't stop pounding down.

Ok, most people don't ever want to imagine such things, but it is the power of weather over us that made meteorology so fascinating to me.

Of course, the weather isn't all about staring at the clouds. In order to get the most out of my education, I attended The Florida State University where I received my Bachelor's in Meteorology.

The program was very heavy on physics and calculus. Not exactly the most exciting material for most folks, but that is exactly what all the models of the atmosphere use to break down the dynamics of how weather works.

My first television job was in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

I was the Chief Meteorologist. I was also the only meteorologist.

It is amazing how quickly you can learn to make a whole lot, out of very little. No radar, no weather computers, no handy dandy clickers, just my book knowledge and the excitement of finally being "out there."

Boy was that a learning experience.

I've tried to keep that excitement for learning everywhere I have worked including Brownsville, Texas; Gainesville, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Washington, D.C., and Orlando, Florida. Now here at WHAS11 I do not have to do with less.

We have all the state of the art tools to keep you and your family safe.

I'm married to Karin, one of my high school friends, and we have four children.

In my spare time I enjoy biking, tennis, golf, and any sport my kids want me to coach. I also take great pride in restoring older homes to their original glory.

Thank you very much for allowing me into your home. I understand the need for trust and I will always do my best to meet your high standards. See you bright and early in the morning.
