(WHAS11)—The controversial Chinese law of only having one child has ended.

Couples will now be allowed to have more than one child in China.

On Friday, the Communist Party announced the change, saying the labor pool is shrinking.

The policy was put in place in the 1970’s to curb population growth, leading to forced abortions, involuntary sterilization and a gender imbalance.

This change allows for the couples to have a second child, only if at least one of the parents is an only child.
