THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — "The Girl With a Pearl Earring" has come home.

After a two-year global tour that drew record crowds in Japan, Italy and the United States, Johannes Vermeer's masterpiece and other Dutch masters have returned home to the newly renovated Mauritshuis (MOW-ritz-house) museum in the Hague.

The small museum, a classic of Dutch architecture, has been expanded and reorganized to accommodate the demands of modern tourists.

Meanwhile the collection's profile was raised by the international exposure its treasures received abroad.

One painting, "The Goldfinch," came home much more famous than when it left thanks to a best-selling novel of the same name that won the Pulitzer.

A novel and movie also helped make "Girl With a Pearl Earring" one of the world's most famous paintings.

The collection also includes several Rembrandts.
