BAGHDAD (AP) — At least 22 people have been killed in a mortar attack on a town south of Baghdad.

More than 50 others were hurt in the attack on the mainly Shiite town (Musayyib) about 40 miles outside Iraq's capital.

Authorities say five mortar rounds slammed into a busy market, a residential building and a parking lot as people returned home from work and shopped.

Police say it appeared the rounds came from a nearby Sunni-dominated town. There's been no claim of responsibility.

The area has a volatile mix of Sunnis and Shiites and was a flashpoint for some of the worst sectarian violence in past years.

Police and hospital officials gave the casualty toll and details on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release information to journalists.
