CAIRO (AP) — A top ally of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and the group's spokesman have been arrested by security forces as they tried to flee the country.
Egyptian authorities say cleric Safwat Hegazy, a fiery preacher, was captured at a checkpoint in eastern Egypt, close to the border with Libya. State-run media say he was disguised as a woman. The cleric is wanted on charges of instigating violence.
Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Mourad Ali was detained at Cairo airport, and was trying to catch a flight to Italy.
The arrests are the latest in a crackdown by Egypt's new military-backed leaders against the Muslim Brotherhood group, from which ousted President Mohammed Morsi hails.
