DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A U.S. diplomat says Washington backs reforms for Bangladesh's garment industry while encouraging global brands not to pull out their business following last month's building collapse that killed more than 1,100 people in the world's worst garment industry disaster.

Under Secretary for Political Affairs Wendy R. Sherman said Monday that Bangladesh must act to improve workplace safety and workers' rights. She adds the U.S. is working with the Bangladesh government, private sector, labor groups and global partners to bring out the reforms.

Last month, an eight-story building housing five garment factories collapsed, killing 1,127 people.

Bangladesh earns $20 billion a year from exports of clothes, mainly to the United States and Europe.
