BEIJING (AP) — China is chiding the U.S. for questioning a deadly attack on the Chinese Central Asian frontier that Beijing says is terrorism but that Washington says should be investigated.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters Thursday that Washington should be more sympathetic since both China and the U.S. are victims of terrorism.

A violent clash between authorities and assailants the Chinese government says were terrorists left 21 people dead Tuesday in the Xinjiang region. The region has seen decades of sporadic separatist violence by indigenous Muslim Uighurs who fear they are being marginalized by Han Chinese.

In the wake of Tuesday's violence, a State Department spokesman called for an open investigation and expressed concern over discrimination against Uighurs.

Hua said the U.S. was making absurd accusations against China's ethnic policies.
