(WHAS11) -- A woman died and a man was injured Thursday after being struck by a car on the Sherman Minton Bridge while the woman was refueling a SUV.
Louisville Metro Police said the woman in her 20s died shortly after being transported to University of Louisville Hospital. A man, described to be in his 20s, was also injured in the accident but suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the accident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64. Apparently, the Ford Explorer the couple was riding in stalled in the right-hand lane of the bridge just before Exit 123 in New Albany.
A man driving a Chevy Malibu struck the couple while they were standing outside the SUV, police said. There was still some daylight at the time of the accident, although it was near sunset, and it's unknown if the stalled car had its lights or hazard lights on.The driver of the Malibu was not hurt.
LMPD said they are awaiting toxicology reports, but they do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident. Police said the driver of the Malibu will not face charges.
The man is recovering at University Hospital.
Police have yet to release the identity of any of the people involved in the accident.
