LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- He definitely has his own personality, stubborn and headstrong baby giraffe Silvester stands tall taking in all the sites.
He is the big draw at the Louisville Zoo. Those with the zoo announced his name. He was named for the surrogate mother who's been caring for him since birth.
“It was my day off when one of the other keepers told me that she was starting to give birth and so I just jumped in my truck and drove my 30 minute drive here and I watched him being born. I just never really expected it to be on my birthday,” said Silvia Zirkelbach, zookeeper.
Silvia Zirkelbach has been raising baby giraffe's at the Louisville Zoo for 30 years. She says Silvester was different, he didn't like being touched.
“I just started scratching and I think it’s more calming so i just started scratching him. So the more I was around him and we just kind of bonded that way,” said Zirkelbach.
Silvester likes being with Silvia but he finds real comfort with his siblings and parents. And that's just the way Silvia has raised him.
“It’s been amazing. Sometimes it’s so very enlightening and exciting.”
