When it was founded in 1968, Bacchus changed Carnival in many ways. By our count, over the years it also introduced many of the super, signature floats that make up a list of the city's most recognizable. That includes Bacchus' "gentle dinosaur" - the Bacchasaurus - who first appeared in the parade in 1972. Like everything else in Bacchus, he was bigger and bolder than most of what you saw from Carnival krewes before that time. And in the 42 years since, the smiling creature carrying Bacchus' barrels of wine (and a couple dozen krewe members) on his back has become a Carnival icon.
