LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- We went one-on-one with the Kentucky lawmaker who pushed for an audit into the millions of taxpayer dollars taken in for the Kentucky Law Enforcement Foundation Program Fund.
Representative Denny Butler switched from Democrat to Republican when he felt leaders of his political party were not willing to investigate KLEFPF. Now he’s running for re-election in a heavily Democratic district against Democrat McKenzie Cantrell.
In a matter of days we anticipate that the audit performed by Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon will be released. Harmon agreed to order the audit upon Representative Butler’s request. The fund takes taxes from Kentuckians’ casualty insurance payments and is supposed to pay firefighters and police officers for keeping up with required certifications. But Butler said tax increases in recent years did not equate to increases for the officers and firefighters and that raised a flag.
