FRANKFORT, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Kentucky Democratic Party announced they have selected Mary Nishimuta to be executive director.
“Mary has a deep background in grassroots organizing, as well as extensive management experience in the private sector,” said Rep. Sannie Overly, chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party. “She will be a tremendous asset to the party as we fight for better jobs, education, and health in Kentucky.”
Nishimuta was a national team leader for the Bernie Sanders campaign, worked with field staff during the Kentucky primary, served on the rules committee and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. She remains engaged in Kentucky as a member of State Central Executive Committee and is active on the Kentucky Democratic Party’s 120-County Strategic Planning and Grassroots Committees.
She graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. She has more than 20 years of management experience with design and creation of supply chain management systems for Fortune 500 companies. She also owns a small business and lives in Frankfort.
“My goal is to work with Kentuckians in all 120 counties to build a strong party that stands up for the people of Kentucky,” said Nishimuta. “I aim to fuse the passion and organizing strength of those who have recently answered the call to action with the deep experience of those who have been actively engaged for years to build a truly representative government that puts the people’s interests first, and not the interests of the wealthiest one percent.”
Nishimuta helped organize the Come Together and Fight Back rally in Louisville that featured Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez.
